People, product, promotion photographer. I am an editorial portrait photographer who specializes in creative business portraits, company working candid photographs, and professional headshots in Boston. My photographs are most often used for branding, websites (website banners, team portraits, bio pages, about our services pages, about us pages, our products), advertising (print ads, billboards, Out Of Home, magazine articles, trade journals), corporate collateral (annual reports, capability brochures), websites as well as social media (like LinkedIn portraits, Outlook portraits, business Facebook pages, Instagram feeds etc.) Many magazines like to use my work for articles profiling a business owner and their products and services.
I consider myself an editorial portrait photographer for business. My photographs express the excitement and entrepreneurial energy of today’s innovative businesses, and the trailblazing CEOs who make them a success. My candid yet polished and bright style lends itself nicely to creatives, makers, artisans, designers, chefs and restauranteurs, life coaches and wellness experts, authors, architects, business visionaries and innovators, lawyers, bankers, non-profits, small businesses, home businesses, and local businesses - startups and established businesses alike. Candid business photography is editorial-style photography in that it presents a company in an open and engaging way while still reflecting style and philosophy, mission statements, company culture, branding, company colors and graphics. Without feeling forced or invasive, it shows authentic company culture during everyday events - a business meeting, a design session, brainstorming, casually chatting, creating the product, providing the service. I shoot real people in real life situations, producing candid portraits and candid interactions of business people in company environments.
I am committed to giving each client a custom stylistic creative approach to their individual brands. Every client has different needs; they want to present themselves as a bespoke entity. To this end, I strive to understand the history of the company’s branding, their audience, demographics, and what separates them from their competition.
I am known as a trustworthy, productive and reliable Boston photographer who delivers on time, on budget, and with a great attitude. I am calm and well-directed under pressure. I pride myself on making my subjects as comfortable as they can be in front of the camera and work hard to make the shot, not just merely take it. My natural affinity for people and my years of experience with grooming high profile public figures allows me to help even the most hesitant client feel confident and capable and really shine in their photograph. Instead of posing people, which gives a manufactured look, I create a natural and comfortable environment for them that reflects their energy and intentions and supports their purpose in being photographed. There’s a simplicity in this approach that allows people to look their best and glow with conviction. I have created portraits of both well-established business CEOs and CFOs and young startup founders. Each subject deserves the same attention to detail and spirited approach.
Editorial portraits, Article portraits, Profile portraits, Team portraits, Entrepreneur portraits, Creative portraits, designer portraits, chef portraits, Business portraits, Executive portraits, company headshots, professional headshots, and corporate portraits are all terms used to describe the sort of photography I do. Every decision you make: what the subject wears, the type of photographic lighting used, the location, the color palette, their expression– all tell a story about the individual and what they care about as a business owner, a visionary, and as a creative mind. As an advertising photographer, I create headshots that are creative and energetic and full of context while still professional. My commercial portraits have a slice-of-life feel, as they are often natural-light portraits taken on location in a studio, creative workroom, design space, restaurant, corporate office, home-office, etc. Looking for the best place to take a portrait is as important as the person in the image, and I strive to find places that express the heart and should of the company and its people. Even when the background is soft focus, the intent is clear and supportive of the powerful, evocative can-do business image.
I photograph business people at their place of business, their studio, their workshops, their design spaces, in conference rooms during meetings or at events. Often, I shoot individual business headshots during company events when they have off-site executives in their home office. This way, my client gets the best value for their money. I often create business headshots in common areas that have flattering natural light. Natural light company portraits are almost minimalistic, but add an authenticity to the feel of the image. These natural light professional headshots are used for team bio pages, website about-us pages, etc.
History and Specs:
As an East-Coast editorial portrait and advertising photographer, I was an early adopter of digital techniques. Importantly, I remember what it was like to shoot with film, and believe that the best digital photographers appreciate the art of the analog darkroom. I now use exclusively Nikon SLRs, which I find are more responsive and give files of over 100 mb as 8-bit RGB. I often shoot to a laptop with allows me and my corporate clients to monitor the shoot at the pixular level or drop an advertising layout over the photograph we are creating.
You can read more behind-the-lens thoughts on my Boston portrait photographers blog.
blog.cynthiaaugust.com On my blog, I describe many of the reasons I approach a particular shoot the way I do and what photographic techniques I use. It is complete with photographs taken during the photo shoot and includes some advertising layouts, campaigns, etc.
