Congratulations! Most of the time it is for a wonderful reason, and is exciting, but with the anticipation comes the inevitable questions: What should I wear? Should I have my hair cut? What about this blemish? What about this color? Makeup? Really? But I’m a guy! And so on.Fear not. My mission to create a perfect photo that captures the real you begins long before the session. This little FAQ sheet can help answer some of those burning questions, and just might give you real inspiration for the shoot. So here we go!1.WHAT SHOULD I WEAR? Excellent question. In general, solid pastel colors and deep tones are best, ones that compliment your skin and are attractive, but not too loud. They should not draw too much focus, since we’d rather see you first, and what you are wearing after. Avoid black. Even though it is classic, and thought of as slimming, it often is too harsh for digital photography – think dark grey, navy, or even a deep brown or green instead. Same goes for white, which can be so bright it competes with everything else in the picture and washes complexions out. Avoid prints in general, but if you want to try one make sure it is a big print without too much contrast. Small prints with big contrast will make your images moiré on the web, and it is less than attractive. What is a moiré? I’m glad you asked. Sing with me:"When new lines hit your eye from two screens when they ply, that's a-moire!'Yikes. I don’t want this for you. So skip checks, polka dots, pinstriped shirts, tight herringbones, plaids, and the like.As far as what type of clothing to wear, if you are a business client, you are best wearing a suit jacket and a neat shirt or blouse. Iron your stuff, I beg you! Wrinkles are miserable for everyone and much harder to remove with Photoshop than with an iron. If you are an actor, choose clothing that is a more neutral version of the type of character you might be cast for. Are you a teenager? Dress like a teen! But if you have more of a clean cut image and you are hoping to be cast for commercials as an All-American son or daughter, leave the Goth look at home. Or budget for multiple looks. Bottom line: Dress for your audience.1.SHOULD I HAVE MY HAIR CUT/COLORED AND MAKEUP DONE? Yes…but. Now is not the time for big changes unless you know you intend to keep them.Don’t try a new style, color, or makeup regimen the night before. Stick with the best look you regularly create. If you have booked one of my hair and makeup artists this will be understood – we strive for a look that is natural, a heightened version of your everyday best. If you are using your own artists and stylists, make sure they understand this too. If they have a new creative look they are dying to try with you, awesome – let’s book a creative shoot and go crazy – I love those! But this shot is not for that.•BUT CYN, I’M A GUY. Awesome. You still need attention to hair and skin, even though we won’t (most likely!) be making you up. Otherwise, same rules apply. 2.OH MY GOSH I HATE MY _______________. I feel you. Believe me I do. One of the reasons I love to be behind the camera is that I don’t have to be in front of it! BUT after taking pictures of people for many years, I have learned a few things about what we see in ourselves vs. what others see in us. Here are five things to remember:•We are our own worst critic. The rest of the world sees you with far kinder eyes than you see yourself. I can’t tell you how many times I have heard someone say ‘Ugh! My ____ is so _______!’ only to have the staff in the shoot say ‘I never even noticed it until you pointed it out!’ and mean it. Those things you obsess about? Even if someone else does notice them, they give far less focus, time and judgment to them than you do, and spend more time seeing your good stuff. So really. It’s okay. Honest.• There is a science to making a good photo. Yup, I said making, not taking. Ask anyone who has worked with me and they will tell you that I have ways to help you stand/sit/move that help you get your best shot without feeling awkward or forced. I research and test this stuff ALL THE TIME. Don’t believe me? Check it out: Proof.•I can fix a lot of things in a way you’d never notice afterward.Eyes not open wide enough? Yup, can fix that a bit. Blemish? Gone. Rogue hair? Yes, absolutely, I do it every day. Wrinkles? Softened. Jawline smoother?Yup. And while that seems like a lot of Photoshop plastic surgery, remember that 1.) I’m an expert and 2.) I am committed to making your image a photo of you, not some plastic version of you. Natural, intuitive retouching. Always.•Your mindset going in will help create a good photo. This is one of those things you have to do for yourself, and it may be hard if you really hate getting your picture taken, but believe me, it helps tremendously. Creative, ambitious, authentic, she knew her brand and what she was selling with confidence. She burst upon the scene in the first month with promotions, events, blog posts, product spotlights, collaborations, margarita parties, you name it. All went well for the first eight months or so. I mean…come on, margarita parties! How could it not?!?But then…her sales started to slip. The newness and novelty of her business began to wear off for her first customer base, and she hadn’t quite hit the next level. And her business plan, while solid, didn’t anticipate the slump well. Here is where my dear, dear friend made her mistake. She panicked. Instead of going to the mattresses with her brand and its mission, some expert advice, and those margaritas in order to figure out how to stick to her post and weather the storm, she did the opposite, reaching out for any and every thing she could add to her brand (and product line) that might bring in ANY customer who was willing to pay. I am talking stuff waaaay out of left field, changes that required more investment on her part without any promise of return. In doing so, she diluted and diminished her million-dollar idea to the point that it was indistinguishable from every other run-of-the-mill business in her area of expertise. While it may have brought in a few more dollars in the short term, the far-reaching damage was pretty bad – her overall brand severely suffered, and she ended up with a big restructuring of the company just months into the process.Which brings me to the secret. It’s actually a little list of secrets:•DIVE DEEP •BE DECISIVE•BE CLEAR•HOLD TIGHT•BELIEVE WITH ALL YOUR MIGHT•MAP YOUR OCEAN BEFORE YOU VOYAGE•WATCH THE WEATHER and KNOW HOW TO ADJUST YOUR SAILS (BEFORE YOU NEED TO)DIVE DEEP – This is the best way to start, but even if you already have an existing brand you are looking to give a boost to, nothing works quite like a back-to-the-basics, deep look at the core of the brand – how your mission statement (you do have one of those, don’t you? If not, check out this article here) has created the face of your business. Don’t be afraid. Look closely. Find your bedrock reasons for doing what you do. Write them down.BE DECISIVE – If you are like me, you have more good ideas than you can round up at once on any given day. And if you do, congratulations – you are definitely an entrepreneurial spirit! But now’s the time to get decisive and make some hard choices. Which ideas and beliefs support your brand the best? Which others might be helpful at some point, but not now? (For example, I have a great set of ideas for when I move more into directing work, but that’s on the back burner for now, so I try not to let those out of the gate until it is time.) And which ideas just don’t work, even if they are great, even if you love them?Divide, decide and stick to those decisions. Then…BE CLEAR – You now know what you are all about. Now, it is time to make it CRYSTAL CLEAR to your target audience. It goes back to that 10 second elevator speech rule. If I can understand what you do in ten seconds, and you feel like you have adequately described it in a way that makes you feel confident, energized and positive, success! If not, keep at it. Ask yourself: What does my brand look like? How can it be instantly and positively recognized? This is a great time to enlist the help of those trusted friends and colleagues who understand your aspirations. Ask them: “What do you think I do?” and see what they say. Are they right? Did they miss anything important? What do they see?BELIEVE WITH ALL YOUR MIGHT – Anyone who knows me will say that I am NOT a blind optimist, but I can tell you that I have a pretty strong faith in our power to make dreams a reality. I’ll write more on that another time, but for now let’s just say this: you can’t not believe. If you don’t truly, at the core of your being, believe that it is possible, it will not happen. Don’t worry about how it will happen. Just believe that it will. How does this apply directly to branding? Well, if a business has complete faith in what it does, the way it gets done, and why, the brand simply radiates. Start looking at businesses through that lens for a while, and you will begin to see who’s got the mojo and who doesn’t. And I guarantee success levels will correlate.Ya just. Gotta. Believe.HOLD TIGHT – Now your branding ship is starting to look seaworthy! So be prepared to stick to what you’ve built. The time and energy you have spent working to shape the face of your business is precious and unique. There is nobody who will do it the way your business does! So hold tight to that, even in the face of slumps and setbacks. The spark that got you this far is the same one that will take you all the way, if you keep it close. Every single day before I start work I read my mission statement and brand description to remind myself what Cynthia August Images is all about. It is a fire under my feet on the good days, and a light in the darkness of tougher ones. I’m holding tight. You should too.MAP THE OCEAN BEFORE YOU VOYAGE – Pre-planning is key to brand success. Know your audience – if you have a clear understanding of your brand, you should equally as clearly understand your ideal client – which means knowing what they want, the way they want it, and, perhaps most importantly, the way they look for it. That way you can show up in the perfect place, with the perfect solution, delivered in the perfect way. Don’t randomly wander, looking for the shore – there be pirates. Map your ocean. And know how to speak mermaid.WATCH THE WEATHER and ADJUST YOUR SAILS – Remember back at the beginning of this list when I told you to be decisive, clear, and sticky? Here’s where I kinda say the opposite. Bear with me. Just like my friend’s business, your business will encounter challenges – economy fluctuations, changes in demand, shifts in technology, slumps, floods of activity, etc. It happens to all of us! While you can’t see everything that’s coming, you can keep an eye on the weather, and be prepared to make changes to your course, even in a hurry. The difference between what I am suggesting and the mistake my friend made is this: if you have a solid understanding of your brand, with its capabilities and limits, what it is and what it isn’t, you can adjust your brand’s sails with confidence instead of panic and continue to move forward without taking on too much water. You never know – the new tack you take just might bring you out ahead of the competition, especially if you are riding the wave of an industry change.You already know the happy ending to my friend’s story – she’s now the joyful head of a powerful brand – it’s clear, it understands and serves its client base perfectly, and it looks towards the future with confidence instead of confusion. But the fact that it is so close to my most instinctive self is arguably the exact reason I have to shake things up.So I post a note on Facebook and invite folks to take a slot, first come, first serve. One a day. Filling the week takes about 45 minutes. Beyond that, the rules are simple. We agree on a place. The subject brings themselves in whatever manner they chose, and I shoot.It gets kinda complex from there.There’s seeing, and seeing. The second one, the trickier one requires patience and, well, flow. A key element of great portraiture is being able to quiet the ‘pictures are being taken!’ energy and tune instead into the deep essence of the subject. To see the person in front of you, and then create the image. That’s challenging work that you simply cannot phone in.Silences happen. Awkward silences happen. Shots don’t work and your subject can tell. In the midst of trying to keep the energy good, you may accidentally stomp all over it. The camera can intimidate instead of inspire. The list of ways to de-rail is endless. But so are the ways back in. And my job is to be awake and aware of the person in front of me so that I can continually bring us back to their individual spirit.Anyway, the interesting thing about that, or at least the thing that I wanted to share with you – is that I while do spend time thinking about the technical aspects of the shot (where, how, with what lights and clothes and stuff), I also spend a lot of time thinking about the person. Actually, I spend more time on that than any other part of the process.Which may sound weird, but hear me out in the form of a question: What is the one thing that is unique in a portrait? Is it all the technical aspects? Well, honestly, no, not really. There are certain portrait photography techniques that really work well, and most great photographers use them in some way. Is it the clothes someone wears or how their hair is styled? That can help with expressing individuality, but the ingredients listed above are nothing without the binding substance – the one truly unique thing that can never be recreated or replaced – the person, present in the moment the image is made.So really, everything else is just window dressing.
